臨床膵島移植は、重症糖尿病の新規治療法として推奨されている。
福岡大学病院は我が国での実施6施設のうち、九州、沖縄で唯一の認定施設であり、2007年11月に九州・沖縄での第一例目を実施した。
本プロジェクトでは新規治療法の開発を行うとともに症例数を蓄積し、臨床治験を実施する。
既に我々は、臨床膵島移植で解決すべき最も重要な課題である、移植早期膵島障害に関し、実験的にメカニズムの全貌を解明し、臨床導入可能な制御法を見出している。
更に移植膵島の再生を目指した新たなアプローチや、iPS 細胞からの膵島細胞の誘導も研究プロジェクトとして進行中である。
今後の展開として、臨床膵島移植を推進する為には、心停止臓器提供の増加が必須であり、その推進を目指して学内外の体制を整備する。
具体的には提供可能病院の倫理委員会へ膵島移植のための心停止膵臓提供承認を申請する。
また全国6認定施設と共同で膵島移植を福岡大学病院で実施する高度医療として申請する。認定されれば患者ならびに研究費負担が軽減される。
更には健康保険適応が見込まれる。
現在、ベイラー大学(ダラス、テキサス州、米国)に研究員を派遣し、膵島移植の共同研究を開始している。
福岡大学で特許を取得した新規知見をベイラー大学膵島移植グループとの共同研究として、ヒト膵島移植での有用性を検証し、臨床導入を開始する予定である。
